Land Rover to Premiere Range E Diesel-Electric Plug-in Hybrid at Geneva Show

The new Land Rover Range_e diesel-electric plug-in prototype that was first teased back in May, 2010, will make its motor show debut at next month's Geneva Salon. The Range_e is said to be one of several working prototypes currently being developed at Land Rover's design and engineering centre in the UK. It is based on the Range Rover Sport model and features a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission mated to an, as-of-yet unspecified, electric motor and battery pack.

The British automaker said the all-wheel drive prototype can run purely on electricity for up to a distance of 20 miles or approximately 32 kilometers and emits as low as 89g/km of CO2. The Range_e also has a top speed of 120 mph or 193 km/h and a combined driving range of 690 miles or 1,110 kilometers.

The Range_e will be joined at Land Rover's Geneva Motor Show stand by two new Limited Editions, the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate and the 2011 Discovery 4 'Landmark' with Black and White themes.

Land Rover added that it will also be announcing full European pricing (excluding UK) for the new Range Rover Evoque in both 3- and 5-door forms, and will also showing a comprehensive range of accessories and options for the vehicle.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said: "Customers like to make their own unique statement with a vehicle and we have provided individuals with lots of opportunity to personalise their new Range Rover Evoque, whilst maintaining the essence of the design."

2010 Land Rover LR4 Full Tech SPecs

The D3s 6-speed manual transmission is no longer available . An improved version of the ZF 6-speed automatic/sequential gearbox is now fitted which includes taller gearing to take advantage of the new engines' greater torque output and an updated lock-up system to further reduce fuel consumption. Other technical changes include the fitting of the more powerful brakes from the Range Rover Sport and thicker anti-roll bars to improve on-road handling. The electronic handling system have been updated- the Stability Control System now includes a programme that detects the onset of understeer and applies the brakes. The D4 retains its predeccesor's fully independent air suspension with cross-linking when off-road and the twin-range transfer gearbox with an electronic infinitly-variable locking centre differential

. As before a similar locking rear differential is available. The Terrain Response system remains but with two new features- the 'Sand' mode incorporates a new traction control mode to prevent loss of traction when starting off and stopping in soft sand, and the 'Rock Crawl' mode gains a feature that applies gentle brake pressure at low (less than walking pace) speeds to improve grip and stability on slick rock.

Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 Review

Photos Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 Review

New Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4_e is Land Rover's best fuel-efficient agent to date. Featuring a new able Stop/Start system, it is the aboriginal assembly agent to absorb technologies from the company's programme of acceptable engineering initiatives, collectively called 'e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES'. On the accepted EU4 cycle, the CO2 emissions of the Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4_e are bargain by 8 per cent, compared with the approachable chiral agent Land Rover Freelander 2. Moreover, in added tests, Land Rover engineers accept abstinent ammunition accumulation abutting 20 per cent in abundant burghal traffic.

The 8 per cent advance equates to a CO2 emissions abridgement of 15 g/km compared with the accepted Freelander 2 TD4 chiral (from 194 g/km to 179 g/km). In agreement of ammunition efficiency, burning is bargain from 7.5 l/100 km to 6.8 l/100 km, a extenuative of 0.7 litres of ammunition every 100 km (62 miles). These gains, accompanying with the added allowances of the gearshift indicator light, software developments and efficiencies from low-rolling-resistance tyres, accomplish the Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 the best fuel-efficient assembly Land Rover anytime built.

Land Rover Freelander 2 TD4 Review

Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director, said: "The Stop/Start Freelander 2 is the aboriginal assembly agent to account from the massive £700 actor advance in acceptable technologies by Jaguar and Land Rover. Range Rover LRX hybrid confirmed for production

First revealed at last year’s Detroit Auto Show, the LRX Concept got much praise for its dynamically design and a stunning looking. The standard version of the LRX was just confirmed for retail in March. Now, according to UK magazine Auto Express and thanks to a £27 million ($44 million) loan from the UK government for the development of an all-new model, the hybrid version of the LRX will enter production.

The LRX's hybrid powertrain is expected to run in three modes: electric-only, petrol only and hybrid drive mode. It will take another two years to bring the advanced hybrid system to market, however. In the mean time, stop-start and brake-energy regeneration will be launched across the Land Rover lineup. The complete cost of the project is estimated at around the £400 million ($650 million) mark.

The LRX was conceived with new technologies in mind, including a lightweight design and a 2.0 litre turbo-diesel hybrid powertrain achieving 4.7 l/100km on bio-diesel - a phenomenal figure for a vehicle of its size.

It features full-time four-wheel drive, Hill Descent Control and Land Rover’s Terrain Response to optimise traction on difficult surfaces ranging from icy roads to wet grass, gravel and snow. The interior of the LRX is designed to be roomy, practical and versatile, trimmed in soft leathers in rich tan and dark chocolate complemented by polished aluminium details.

Production will be handled at Land Rover’s Halewood facility in the UK, which employs about 2,000 people and is currently responsible for the LR2 (Freelander 2) and the Jaguar X-Type.
